Great points and I totally agree (13 years in the tech industry).

The other reason that I prefer open source products is that they appeared to be designed by people who actually use the product. One of the biggest proplems with commercial software is that they many software programmers and engineers who write the code actually never use it.

With open source, many of the programmers have a vested interest in making sure their code works; they are going to use it.
